OBJECTIVE
Learning respect
The purpose of these activities is to provide guidelines for parents to scaffold children's awareness and understanding of the value of respect. Parents can use educational apps such as Good Habits & Manners for Kids, Sir Dapp! Game Show, and so on to teach children respect.
The story reading and retelling activities are divided into 4 sessions according to Cope and Kalantzis' (2015) Learning by Design framework.

SESSION 1 - EXPERIENCING/SITUATED PRACTICE
Duration - 30 mins (Variable)
With reference to the story of the selected app, parents can teach children the value of respect within the context of the family.
What are the characters doing?
How do they show respect to family members?
SESSION 2 - CONCEPTUALISING/OVERT INSTRUCTION
Duration - 30 mins (Variable)
During the second reading, as the child internalises the value of respect as presented by the story of the selected app, parents can guide the child to understand what encompasses the value of respect.
They can discuss with the child what respect means by using the following prompters:
Why is respect important?
How does respect contribute to harmony?
SESSION 3 - ANALYSING/CRITICAL FRAMING
Duration - 30 mins (Variable)
During the third reading, parents can perform a deep analysis of the narrative to develop children's critical thinking.
Parents can use the following prompters with children:​
Why are the characters respectful to each other?
Why are the characters disrespectful to each other?
SESSION 4 - APPLYING/TRANSFORMED PRACTICE
Duration - 30 mins (Variable)
To enable children to practise the value of respect, parents can consider relating these values to their own family and beyond using these pointers:
Who should the children display respect to within the family?
Who should the children display respect to outside of the family?
Can we make a video of our own family?
