Honesty: List

OBJECTIVE

Learning honesty

  • The purpose of these activities is to provide guidelines for parents to scaffold children's awareness and understanding of the value of honesty. Parents can use educational apps such as The Boy Who Cried Wolf, Pinocchio Adventures, and so on to teach children honesty.

  • The story reading and retelling activities are divided into 4 sessions according to Cope and Kalantzis' (2015) Learning by Design framework.

MATERIALS

SESSION 1 - EXPERIENCING/SITUATED PRACTICE

Duration - 30 mins (Variable)

  • During the first session, parents can read the story with the child using the following prompters:

    • What do you like about the story?

    • What is something you dislike in the story?

SESSION 2 - CONCEPTUALISING/OVERT INSTRUCTION

Duration - 30 mins (Variable)

  • During the second reading, parents can guide children to understand the importance of honesty using the following prompters:

    • Why did the character tell a lie?

    • What do we feel about dishonest characters?

SESSION 3 - ANALYSING/CRITICAL FRAMING

Duration - 30 mins (Variable)

  • During the third reading, parents can perform a deep analysis of the narrative in the app with the child.

  • Parents can discuss with the child how honesty can be encouraged using the following prompters:

    • Why is lying wrong?

    • How can we encourage someone to be honest?

SESSION 4 - APPLYING/TRANSFORMED PRACTICE

Duration - 30 mins (Variable)

  • During the fourth session, parents can extend learning to the child's experience using the following prompters:

    • Will you tell me about a time when someone was dishonest to you?

    • How did that made you feel?
